PHIDIPPIDES AWARD COSMOS FM

THE PHIDIPPIDES AWARD Since 1994, the Board of Directors of GAEPIS, Inc. and its flagship radio service, Hellenic Public Radio-Cosmos FM, have presented the Phidippides Award to a person or an organization in recognition of their efforts in the advocacy of Hellenism. In selecting a recipient, the Board is especially focused on global contributions to the preservation and promotion of Hellenism. The award was inspired by the Athenian herald named Phidippides (Ημεροδρόμος Κήρυξ). According to Herodotus, Phidippides was dispatched by Miltiades in 490 B.C. to request the aid of the Spartans in defending Athens from the Persians, who had landed at Marathon. Phidippides is said to have accomplished an incredible feat, as he ran 200 kilometers in two days to reach Sparta. A few centuries after the Battle of Marathon, Lucian also noted that it was Phidippides who ran to Athens to announce the victory to the awaiting city. Upon his arrival in Athens, Phidippides is said to have called out “Rejoice! We have won!” and then died. Phidippides’ dedication and stamina in delivering the news are an inspiration to our organization as we work toward bringing Hellenic-Americans and philhellenic communities quality coverage of Hellenic cultural, social, and political issues. It is our belief that a more well-informed Hellenic American and philhellenic communitiy will be better equipped to meet the challenge of preserving the Hellenic heritage in the U.S. and throughout the world in the future.
